Opinion Writing for Kids: Share What You Think!

Opinion writing lets you:

Tell what you think or feel about something

Give reasons to support your opinion

Use words like “I think” or “I believe” to make it clear it's your opinion

Example:

I think cats make the best pets because they are cute and easy to take care of.

Notice how the sentence tells what the opinion is and why!

Try this with friends or in class!

Step 1: Read the statement

Step 2: Decide if you agree or disagree

Step 3: Give a reason for your answer

Statements:

1. Ice cream is better than cake.

2. Summer is the best season of the year.

3. Dogs are better than cats as pets.

Example Answer:

I agree that ice cream is better than cake because it comes in many flavors and is cold on a hot day.

1. Opinion: I think pizza is the best food.

Explanation: It has many flavors and is fun to share with friends.

2. Opinion: I believe summer is the best season.

Explanation: We can go swimming and play outside all day.

3. Opinion: I think reading books is fun.

Explanation: You can go on adventures and meet new characters in your imagination.

4. Opinion: I believe dogs are better than cats.

Explanation: They love to play and always make you feel happy.

5. Opinion: I think recess is the best part of school.

Explanation: It gives me time to run, play, and relax with my friends.

1. Start with your opinion – “I think…” or “I believe…”

2. Give at least 2 reasons to explain your opinion

3. Use examples to make your writing stronger

4. End with a conclusion – sum up your opinion

Example Full Opinion Paragraph:

I believe recess is the best part of the school day. I love playing with my friends and running around outside. It also gives me time to rest and get ready for the next class. That’s why I think recess is the best!
